It is easy to overlook boiler servicing, especially if you have only just moved into your new home and you are still getting to grips with solo adult life. Many of us don’t even consider that boilers need servicing (spoiler alert – they do!), and neglecting to have it done can lead to many problems further down the line.
A good boiler servicing, however, can be the key to highlighting any issues that may exist before they become expensive problems. Here, we are going to cover some of the main reasons why you should regularly have your boiler checked, at least once per year, and why summer is the best time.
Also, it is always a great idea to have boiler cover in place just to cover yourself if things go wrong.
#1: Boiler Servicing Catches Problems Early
Like we said, it is easy to forget that you don’t just use your boiler during the winter. Each day you use hot water (and some of us even have the heating on during the summer!)
Having your boiler serviced every year means that an engineer can find any problems that your boiler has and address them before they manifest into major problems that could leave you without hot water and central heating in the winter – a nightmare scenario. There are plenty of options to consider, such as the plans offered by Certi UK. If you cover your boiler with them, you get a free boiler service included which is an option well worth considering.
Problems with your boiler will only get worse as time goes by. If you ignore them, you could find yourself paying out hundreds of pounds to fix a problem that could have been caught early on.
#2: It’s Cheaper Than a Replacement Boiler
Servicing your boiler costs less money than you might think (and it absolutely costs a whole lot less than replacing your entire boiler!)
Regular maintenance and check-ups will mean that your boiler will be kept running at peak condition because any issues are found and fixed right away. This means your boiler is less likely to have a complete meltdown and require replacing. A boiler that is well maintained will last a lot longer than a boiler that hasn’t been looked at for years, saving you a whole lot of money in the long-term.
#3: Doing It During Summer Sets You Up for Winter
There is nothing worse than your boiler conking out during the dead of winter – trust us on that one! We wouldn’t wish it on anybody.
By having your boiler serviced during the summer, those hidden problems that could cause major issues will be caught out during the warmer months, leaving plenty of time for them to be fixed before winter rolls around. By not getting your boiler serviced in summer, you are pretty much playing Russian Roulette with any problems that are there. They may or may not manifest into bigger issues, but do you really want to take that chance, though?
#4: Boiler Servicing Keeps It Safe
Boilers can be dangerous when they go unmaintained and not serviced. Remember what your boiler does – it burns gas to heat up water, and I am sure that we don’t need to tell you that gas isn’t exactly safe. A boiler that is leaking gas is a recipe for catastrophic disaster.
It isn’t just gas that you need to worry about, either. In fact, there is a far more dangerous substance that can leak out from a non-serviced boiler – carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is odourless, not flammable, and has no colour. It cannot be seen and is often dubbed a “silent killer” because it can cause loss of consciousness and subsequent death. Thousands of people go to A&E each year with carbon monoxide poisoning, too.
Servicing your boiler gives you peace of mind that your boiler is in full working order and is not going to start leaking.
#5: Servicing Keeps Your Boiler Under Warranty
If your boiler is under warranty, then this will only apply if you get your boiler serviced on a regular basis, often annually. This is because non-serviced boilers are more likely to break down and boiler manufacturers place the onus on the consumer to ensure that they are kept in good working order.
If you do not have your boiler serviced for more than 12 months, then this may void your warranty. This means that if your boiler does end up breaking down in the future, you may not be able to claim back the money you spent on a repair or replacement. That’s not a situation that you want to be in.
Boiler Servicing is Not Optional
Boiler servicing is something that you need to do each year, ideally in the summer. It is simply part and parcel of running your own home. It keeps you safe and warm and is cheaper than paying for repairs and replacements. It’s a no-brainer, really.
