Ah, the skirt. Wear it a multitude of ways and introduce it to your capsule wardrobe. A skirt, no matter the material it’s made from, can, in fact, be worn all year round. Whatever you do, don’t be afraid of dusting it off in the autumn and winter months, just because it might be a bit chilly outside. There are ways in which you can style your skirt, whatever the weather.

What type of skirt should I be wearing each season?

The maxi – Ideal for all year round, the maxi skirt can be worn to keep your legs warm in the cold autumn and winter months, as well as be freeing and keep you cool in the summer. Pair with a chic strappy top tucked in for a cute spring/summer look, perhaps with a denim jacket over the top for the cooler evenings. For the winter months, try your maxi skirt with a pair of boots and a cosy knit jumper for the ultimate chic look.

The pencil – The dress that can take you from the office to drinks with friends effortlessly. A pencil skirt should be a staple in every woman’s wardrobe. Opt for bare legs and a pair of court shoe heels for the summer months, and pair with tights and boots for the colder months to keep warm.

The sundress – You may be surprised to hear that the sundress made the list. Yes, it might not be a skirt, but pair with a soft luxurious jumper in the winter and voila, you have yourself a new item of clothing!

The mini – Not for everyone, but the mini can make for a great all year round skirt. Whether yours is made from a smart material or denim, you can wear them in spring, summer, autumn and winter. For the colder months layer up on top; think jumpers, cosy knit cardigans and thick colourful scarves.

The satin – The new staple and a very popular option over the past couple of years; the satin skirt is best worn during the colder months. This may surprise you, but they look positively stunning with a chunky knitted jumper or roll neck on top! Pair with some gorgeous heels and you can go from the office to drinks in a flash.

What about if I’m over 40?

The right skirt can be worn by anyone at any age. Just because you’re over 40, doesn’t mean you can’t completely rock a midi satin or pleated skirt! But, when you’re styling your skirt, think carefully about what you team it with. Think beautiful shirts, boat neck and roll neck jumpers and ankle boots; or simple tees and cardigans for a more casual look and feel.

However you style yours, a selection of different staple skirts to take you through each season effortlessly, will completely transform your wardrobe.
